Every set of errands seems to take me past a little hot dog shop over on Blackrock Turnpike in Fairfield, CT called Super Duper Weenie. Cars always seem to fill the parking lot regardless of the time of day and the stand was even featured on an episode of Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins, so I decided to give-in to the temptation and try some dogs.

November 10, 1996: Felix Potvin (Toronto Maple Leafs) vs. Ron Hextall (Philadelphia Flyers)

      Hextall races up ice to find Potvin in the midst of a postgame brawl. Both goalies connect on a few haymakers before they tie each other up. 

March 26, 1997: Patrick Roy (Colorado Avalanche) vs. Mike Vernon (Detroit Red Wings)

It’s the defining moment of the bitter Avalanche/Red Wings rivalry of the 90s. Roy and Vernon meet at center ice to exchange jabs. Vernon ends the fight when, he tackles Roy, to the pleasure of the Hockeytown crowd. 

The Deadly Appetite Suppressant

Evan Gannon lights his cigarette. The Syracuse University senior quit for more than year at the urging of his girlfriend, who refused to go anywhere near his face because the scent of smoke on his beard was so strong.

Once the couple broke-up, though, he restarted the habit. “In her absence,” he says with a laugh, “I’m obviously not doing too well with quitting.”

Gannon is part of the 20 percent of Americans that regularly smoke cigarettes, according to a 2008 study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite the health risks of tobacco, many continue to smoke as a means of venting stress and weight control. The nicotine in cigarettes can serve as an appetite suppressant for some, meaning that instead of eating lunch, a dieter can smoke a cigarette. Though cigarettes account for more than 440,000 deaths in the United States each year, the difficulties of stopping make it a challenging habit to shake.

6 Tips for a Comedy Club

I just got home from the Improv in Homestead, PA and tonight’s act Jon Lajoie (pronounced Lajwah) performed a very entertaining set of stand-up infused with a couple of his popular songs. Lajoie, who plays the character Taco on FX’s TV series The League, earned his fame online with YouTube hits like “Show Me Your Genitals,” a parody of sexist rap songs, and “Everyday Normal Guy,” a rap song for middle class white men.

Lajoie started his set with the list of rules for a stand-up comedian, but I’ve learned that the audience also has an unspoken set of its own. So before you make your next trip to the comedy club, read these six tips to make sure you don’t act like a tool.
